About the Club

VOCM had its origins from the Venue Volvo forum in Autoworld generating a lot of interest and passion for the marque. Volvo owners/enthusiasts who were members of the Venue Volvo forum than decided to meet face to face in addition to meeting in cyberspace.

In August 2002, a handful of the members decided to get together and the first meeting was conducted at the Awan Besar R & R along the KESAS Highway. These meetings soon became regular and continued to draw interest from other members of the Venue Volvo forum. Attendance at these meetings soon grew from a handful to two to three dozens. Thoughts of having a proper club for Volvo Owners soon surfaced.

In August 2003, about a year after the first meeting at Awan Besar, BRICKS.my was formed and around the same time, more than 40 members got together and elected a committee to see to the running of the "club".

The elected Committee Members got down to work and, in November 2003, a secret ballot was taken amongst the elected Committee Members to select the Heads of Committee in the various sections set up in the "club". These Heads of Committee are to head the PR & Events Committee, Finance Committee & Merchandise Committee in addition to the Administration Committee. Under the Heads of Committee are other Committee Members who will assist to run the individual committee.

Having structured the organization of the "club", the Committee Members had their first committee meeting on 23rd December, 2003 wherein it was decided that the "club" would approach Volvo Cars Malaysia (VCM) on an official basis and to seek "recognition" of the club. This was done and the club’s name was officially changed to Volvo Owners Club of Malaysia (VOCM) on 17th March, 2004 with the blessing and approval of VCM. VCM also gave their approval to use their trademarks, ie, Volvo for Life, etc.

Meanwhile, the venue for meetings was changed from Awan Besar to Streetformula, an establishment which provided the members ample parking space, F & B and privacy to conduct the now regular meetings. Subsequently, a decision was made to adopt Streetformula as the official clubhouse for VOCM. However, this was not to last long as the lease of Streetformula expired and VOCM has been on the hunt for a proper clubhouse since.

Following the official recognition by VCM, VOCM went on to draw up a program of activities for the rest of the year. One of the activities decided upon was to organize a Treasure Hunt, the proceeds of which will be donated to a worthy cause. After much deliberation, it was decided that the proceeds of the Treasure Hunt will be donated to the Ma’ daerah Turtle Sanctuary, an NGO dedicated to the conservation of the marine turtles coming to lay their eggs in Malaysia.

The thoughts of the Committee Members for the club were many and one of these was to register VOCM officially as a club proper with the Registrar of Societies. With the official status, it was thought that recognition of VOCM would be easier to obtain from sponsors, etc. However, there were a lot of hurdles to overcome with official registration of the club. One of the difficulties envisaged was the administration of the club on a full time basis. This proved difficult as the club would require a compliment of full time staff which it cannot afford and therefore impractical. Nevertheless, it was decided that the official registration of the club be deferred until a suitable time and the running of the club be shouldered by volunteers, mainly the Committee Members.

The above decision was also far from ideal as it also presented practical problems when the Committee Members which went ahead to organize the Treasure Hunt. To overcome this, a decision was made to register a company under the name of VOCM Management to run the club and manage any funds received. The so-called "shareholders" of VOCM Management would be made up of the four Heads of Committee. Please note that the set-up was decided upon mainly for practical reasons and not for any personal gains. Any sponsorships/donations/funds received by VOCM for the Treasure Hunt or any other future activities would be channeled through VOCM Management and with proper accounts that will be scrutinized by the relevant authorities. This arrangement will remain until and unless VOCM is officially registered as a club.
